Rust Nature Sanctuary Throughout the year, Rust Nature Sanctuary provides a diversity of wildlife to delight one and all. Spring peepers lead the chorus of frogs and toads as winter gives way to spring.
In summer, our pond is a great place to watch for dragonflies, painted turtles, and wading birds, such as great blue herons. Visitors to our meadows will find a variety of butterflies and summer wildflowers.
The Audubon Naturalist Society of the Central Atlantic States, Inc. Fostering stewardship of the region's environment since 1897, the Audubon Naturalist Society (ANS) of the Central Atlantic States, a 501(c)(3) organization, educates area residents about our natural world through classes, trips, camps, school visits, and teacher training. In addition to Rust, the Audubon Naturalist Society is owner and steward of two other sanctuaries: Woodend Sanctuary ANS headquarters, Woodend is a place apart –40 acres of wildflower meadow, meandering trails, and serene pond just minutes from the Capital Beltway. It is also home to a handsome mansion that hosts weddings and special events. Webb Sanctuary The Webb Sanctuary consists of 20 acres on the edge of Clifton, a restored 19th century railroad village in southern Fairfax County. This small enclave includes a stream that flows by a meadow, native orchids, several amphibian species, and a variety of birds. A self-guided trail winds through the property.
