Throughout the year, Rust Nature Sanctuary provides a diversity of wildlife to delight one and all. Spring peepers lead the chorus of frogs and toads as winter gives way to spring. In summer, our pond is a great place to watch for dragonflies, painted turtles, and wading birds, such as great blue herons. Visitors to our meadows will find a variety of butterflies and summer wildflowers.

As the leaves turn color in the fall, these wildflowers transform into seed-heads. They provide nourishment to white-throated sparrows, kinglets, and resident birds. Migratory songbirds gorge on poison ivy berries, owl perch on bare branches, and red fox dart across the meadow. Newly fallen snow shows the tracks of turkey, deer, raccoons, and mice.

Come and enjoy Rust Nature Sanctuary anytime from dawn to dusk, seven days a week, any day of the year. No admission fee. Bring your binoculars, camera, and a picnic lunch. Take photographs, and leave with pleasant memories and plans to return.

In addition to Rust, the Audubon Naturalist Society is owner and steward of two other sanctuaries:

Woodend Sanctuary

Chevy Chase, Maryland 20815

ANS headquarters, Woodend is a place apart –40 acres of wildflower meadow, meandering trails, and serene pond just minutes from the Capital Beltway. It is also home to a handsome mansion that hosts weddings and special events.

For more information, please contact Woodend’s director of rental events, Rebecca Robinson at rrobinson@audubonnaturalist.org or 301-652-9188.
